Short Fiction Journal

In Rory Say's short story for Short Fiction Journal, young Isaac explores his uncle Roger's house with his cousin Avery during a family gathering. While the adults converse elsewhere, the children discover a nearly empty swimming pool. In a moment of reckless play, Isaac pushes Avery, causing her to hit her head and appear lifeless as blood fills the pool. Overwhelmed with guilt, Isaac leaves Avery's body and rejoins the unaware adults. Feeling trapped, he desperately tries to escape the gravity of what happened. Illustrating the adults' faces, I subtly infused them with unease, mirroring Isaac's emotions.
